NoticeMe: A Land-Use Notification Tool For Neighborhoods

We know that it's hard for the average citizen to keep up on all the public meeting agendas for properties in their community, so the City has launched NoticeMe, a notification tool to help residents stay informed on proposed land-use changes in their neighborhoods.  Types of notifications include conditional use requests, zoning changes, text amendments, major subdivisions, variance and decision appeals, zoning verifications, and non-conforming use determinations.  Don't worry if you don't recognize all of these words--NoticeMe also has a glossary that spells out what these land-use terms mean for your neighborhood.

To pick the geographic area you wish to track, you can choose between already-drawn neighborhood association boundaries or Council Districts, or you can draw your own boundaries right on the map.  There is even a "Take the Tour" button that will show you step-by-step instructions to make sure you receive the exact information you're looking for, in the format you want.

OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR POLICE COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARDS TO END SATURDAY, SEPT. 8

The City of New Orleans and New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) today announced the deadline for open enrollment for Police Community Advisory Board (PCAB) membership. Open enrollment will officially end on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at 5 p.m. for PCAB advisory groups citywide.

PCABs are district-based; there is one advisory group per NOPD District (eight total). Each PCAB member serves a 24-month term. PCABs create the framework for a public participation plan with the NOPD to engage in a collaborative problem-solving process that supports both the community and the police desire to enhance public safety. PCABs are responsible for vetting community ideas and suggestions; working with NOPD to understand operations, processes and challenges; and building consensus on priority items important to the community before submitting recommendations to NOPD for consideration. PCABs are also responsible for assisting NOPD in recruitment efforts.

Membership is open to all residents in the city of New Orleans who are eighteen years or older who may be interested in serving as a volunteer leader in their respective police district. Applications for selection can be found online at www.nola.gov/neo/pcab or may be picked up at the Neighborhood Engagement Office at City Hall or any NOPD Station. Completed applications may be submitted online, emailed to neighborhoods@nola.gov or returned to any NOPD station by Sept. 8, 2018.

Police Community Advisory Board Orientation and Training

On January 28, 2017, veteran and the newest members of Police Community Advisory Boards (PCABs) completed an orientation and training. Held at the UNO Lindy Boggs International Conference Center, this event brought members of the community together with the leadership of New Orleans Police Department and the Department of Justice for an overview of the NOPD organization and the role of the PCABs in our community.

The Police-Community Advisory Board (PCAB) program promotes collaboration between the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and community leaders. Each of the eight police districts in New orleans has a PCAB board made up of seven resident volunteers who serve a two year term. Board members meet quarterly and make recommendations to NOPD on issues like public safety strategies, operations, resource deployment, and policies. For more information about PCABs, click here.

Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Venetian Isles Area of New Orleans

New Orleans – Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (S&WB) has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for the Venetian Isles area. This event is the result of a water main break that has caused pressure in Venetian Isles to drop below the standard.  The repair to the break is still forthcoming due to high water in this subdivision located outside of flood protection.

Residents in Venetian Isles are advised per the Louisiana Department of Health not to drink, make ice, or brush teeth with tap water until further notice. Residents in the Venetian Isles area that are immune-compromised are advised not to wash hands, or shower or bathe. All other residents are advised to take the following precautions:

-Washing hands: Use soap and tap water, dry hands then apply hand sanitizer.  The safest option is to wash with safe water.

-Shower or bath: Being careful not to swallow any water, one may take a shower safely. Using caution when bathing infants and young children so that no water is swallowed is considered safe. A sponge bath reduces the chance of swallowing water. The time spent bathing should be minimized. Children and disabled individuals should have their bath supervised to ensure water is not ingested. Though the risk of illness is minimal, individuals who have recent surgical wounds, are immunosuppressed, or have a chronic illness may want to consider using bottled or boiled water for cleansing until the advisory is lifted. For those who want to be absolutely safe, use safe water until further notice per the Louisiana Office of Public Health – Infectious Disease Epidemiology Section.

S&WB and the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) officials will begin testing water samples as soon as the area is accessible.

Customers in other areas of the city are NOT AFFECTED and do not need to boil their water.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice for customers in Venetian Isles. S&WB will notify residents and businesses when the advisory is lifted. If you have any questions, please call 52WATER (529-2837).

Boil water advisories are issued out of an abundance of caution whenever the water pressure drops below 15psi. We agree with the recommendations of our regulatory partner, the Louisiana Department of Health, that it is prudent to issue these advisories out of an abundance of caution. The concern is that a pressure drop inside of the water pipe could allow an opportunity for contaminants into the pipe. Chlorine is a chemical that is added to water to combat contamination. The Sewerage and Water Board staff maintains a high chlorine residual and we aggressively and continually monitor our chlorine residual to ensure that our potable water has the ability to fight off bacteriological growth.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOILING WATER

Boil water for one full minute in a clean container. The one-minute boil time begins after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. (If there is a flat taste, it can be eliminated by shaking the water in a bottle or pouring it from one container to another.)

Please review and follow the Louisiana Office of Public Health’s Recommendations for Boil-Water Advisories listed on our website at http://new.dhh.louisiana.gov/assets/oph/Center-PHCH/Center-CH/infectious-epi/EpiManual/BoilWaterAdvisory.pdf or www.swbno.org to ensure that all tap water is properly disinfected before use.
