Salute to Neighborhood Hero Victor Gordon

walmart-mayorvic.jpg

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Mr. Victor A. Gordon, Sr., longtime civic leader and president of the Pontilly Neighborhood Association, passed away last week.

Mr. Gordon’s community involvement and commitment spans over 30 years, during which he fervently advocated for improved quality of life at the local, state and national levels. For almost a half a century, he served as the president of the Pontilly Neighborhood Association (Pontchartrain Park & Gentilly Woods), where he was instrumental in post-Katrina recovery efforts.

His passion and commitment to his community certainly shined through his work. Mr. Gordon worked as an educator in the Orleans Parish school system for 35 years and he served on several nonprofit boards, including Neighborhood Partnership Network, Total Action Community, and Committee for a Better New Orleans.

Mr. Gordon was a friend to the Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office and during a recent neighborhood spotlight article, Mr. Gordon encouraged other community leaders to represent all members of their respective communities and to collaborate with other neighborhoods to build a stronger and healthier New Orleans.

Mr. Gordon was tough, but fair. He held everyone accountable, but always offered solutions. Victor Gordon was the epitome of a true community leader. We will miss him.

Friends and family will gather on Thursday, June 30th for the memorial service to commemorate the life of Victor Gordon at 11am at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 4700 Pineda St. with visitation beginning at 9am. Condolences may be expressed online at www.tharpsontheimerfh.com.

September's Neighborhood Leaders Roundtable

The Neighborhood Engagement Office hosted their quarterly Neighborhood Leaders Roundtable on Saturday, September 23rd in Ochsner Baptist’s Café De Lis. This year’s theme was Sustainable Water Management: Moving Forward with Resilience.

118 leaders from across the City attended this event. Mayor Mitch Landrieu was warmly received by the crowd as he spoke about sustainable water management, alluding to the many successes we’ve had and the challenges that we still have to face together in the years to come. The Mayor set the stage for an informative presentation from Deputy Mayor/Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Resilience Officer Jeff Hebert, who spoke at length about living with and managing water in our unique environment.

Resilience Outreach Manager, Charles Allen III, and Resilience Design Manager, Colleen McHugh, from the Office of Resilience and Sustainability then informed residents about green infrastructure and water management initiatives that are currently underway across the City. Following these presentations, leaders had the opportunity to ask some very pertinent questions on behalf of their communities.

Following the formal event, residents engaged with a range of green infrastructure and water management entities in the form of a resource fair that included: the Office of Resilience and Sustainability, NORA’s Green Infrastructure team, Water Wise, Urban Conservancy, Green Light New Orleans, Waggoner and Ball, and Topobox.

This event was truly a success, as residents left informed and ready to do their part in ensuring that together, we can achieve comprehensive water mitigation solutions across New Orleans.

Loans are open to businesses of all sizes, most private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters whose property was damaged or destroyed by the flooding. The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes.
