Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

Mayor Mitch Landrieu is hosting a series of events in August 2015 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. One signature event is the Citywide Day of Service on Saturday, August 29 from 9am–2pm.

On this day, 10,000 volunteers will participate in meaningful projects across six different regions of the city including: Florida/Desire; Central City; New Orleans East; Lake Area/Mid-City/Gentilly; Treme/7th Ward and the Lower Ninth Ward.

The City of New Orleans is asking community groups (such as non-profit, faith based and neighborhood organizations) to submit proposals for volunteer projects.  An organization must host a minimum of 50 volunteers in one of the target regions.  A volunteer project is defined as an activity where people come together and create or fix a community priority on August 29.  In the coming weeks, the community will have an opportunity to sign up for projects through the website http://www.katrina10.org.

If your organization is interested, please complete the Project Proposal Form no later than Friday, May 29.  Organizations can submit multiple proposals for consideration.

Please note that proposals will be evaluated based on an organization’s ability to manage volunteers and produce a high impact project.  Logistical and financial support is available on a case by case basis.

Please contact dayofservice@networknola.org with questions.

Commemorating the February 2017 New Orleans East Tornado

A year ago today, on February 7th, 2017, a category EF-3 tornado devastated large portions of New Orleans East. This was the strongest tornado ever recorded in the city’s history, destroying up to 300 homes and injuring over 30 people. Luckily, there was no loss of life, but residents in the East are still feeling the impact of this weather event today.

Following the tornado, the Neighborhood Engagement Office immediately mobilized to assist residents at the temporary shelter at Joe Brown Park.  NEO staff assisted in coordinating meals, distributing supplies, directing traffic, and organizing relief services for displaced residents. NEO operated in this capacity until the temporary shelter closed—working closely with Emergency Management services to ensure that New Orleans East residents were taken care of until they could return to their neighborhoods. Further, NEO staff was involved in extensive damage surveying, as well as in debris-clearing operations. We coordinated with faith leaders across the City to ensure that residents had access to donated resources.

We were moved by the resolve of the residents in the face of adversity. It was also incredible to see the outpouring of generosity from those all over the City.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans City Council will host a series of community meetings to discuss budget priorities as the City begins its 2017 budgeting for outcomes process. Other City officials attending will include deputy mayors, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Superintendent Tim McConnell and other department and agency leaders.

The goal of the budgeting for outcomes process is to produce a more resident-driven budget and ensure process improvement and accountability of our government performance. This national best practice is designed to enhance services and get a better return on investment of public dollars by encouraging City agencies to invest public resources based on the results residents and City leaders want to achieve. While traditional budgeting systems are hinged on incremental changes to the previous year’s level of effort, budgeting for outcomes ensures that all City budgets are funded based on how well they achieve residents’ priorities.

Before each district meeting, City officials will also host a resource center from 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. where residents may visit one-on-one with representatives from several City departments and agencies to address specific complaints and concerns.  All community meetings will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.  Residents who cannot attend community meetings are invited to share their comments and input by sending e-mail to mayor@nola.gov.

Interpretation in Spanish will be available at all meetings. Vietnamese interpretation will be available at the District E meeting.

Community Office Hours 2019

COHLogo-(1).png

City Hall is coming to your neighborhood! In an effort to better connect residents with local government, City Hall is excited to announce that the expansion of the Mayor’s Community Office Hours Program began on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Residents will now have the opportunity to engage with representatives from various city departments more often and at more locations throughout the city. Community Office Hours have been extended Monday through Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A pilot initiative was first implemented in June 2018 when City staff began holding regular office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays at a number of locations in neighborhoods across the city. The initiative was an overwhelming success.

Community Office Hours will enable City Hall to be more accessible, responsive and helpful to a greater number of local residents. This effort will create a two-way street of effective communication and information sharing in order to more effectively address important neighborhood issues.

Click this link for more information on Community Office Hours, including specific dates and locations.
