Three Alarm fire at 223 North Broad Street

Friday, March 15, 2013 at 06:35 am, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call for 223 North Broad at Bienville street.  When firefighters arrived on the scene, fire had already extended to the second floor of this vacant two story wood frame structure and had broken the roof line; a second alarm was struck immediately. As firefighters searched the building they found signs that possibly vagrants had been or could still be inside due to several mattresses and other items. A third alarm was called as the fire burned out of control causing a portion of second floor to collapse.  No firefighters were injured in the collapse and a search revealed no vagrants were in the building.  The building had been vacant since hurricane Katrina and was scheduled for demolition today.

The New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Emergency Medical Services,   and the American Red Cross all assisted in the mitigation of this incident.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
