Resident and Pets Rescued at Sunday Morning Fire on Lowerline St.

Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 5:22 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched on a call of a 1-alarm fire with possible persons trapped in the 2000 block of Lowerline St. in uptown New Orleans.  The first company arrived on the scene of 2025-27 Lowerline St. at 5:29 a.m., finding the porch and front attic of this single-story shotgun double heavily involved in fire.  NOFD firefighters had already began a primary search of both residences when the occupant of 2027 Lowerline approached to tell them that he had gotten out when he heard his neighbors’ smoke detector had been activated but believed that someone could possibly still be in the home at 2025 Lowerline St.  Firefighters located an adult male resident of the home, still in bed, in a rear bedroom and escorted him out to safety.  He was treated on the scene by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) and transported to an area hospital for further observation.  A female resident of 2025 Lowerline arrived on the scene while NOFD members were still performing suppression activities and explained that their pets were still in the home.  Firefighters located two birds and a cat and safely removed all three from the residence.  NOFD firefighters were able to contain the fire to the front porch, front room and front attic areas of the homes.  Six NOFD units carrying 20 fire suppression personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 6:02 a.m.  Fire Superintendent Timothy McConnell stated that, “this is a perfect example of the importance of smoke detectors. Being alerted by the detectors saved the lives of these two citizens”. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated. NOEMS and Entergy also assisted in the mitigation of this incident.
