Three-Alarm Fire in the 1200 Block of N. Galvez St

Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 7:50 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 911 call reporting a fire in the 1200 block of N. Galvez St.  The first company arrived on the scene at 7:54 p.m. and found a vacant wood-framed camel-back dwelling fully involved with flames already coming through the roof, a second alarm was struck immediately at 7:55 p.m.  The condition and size of the structure involved and the close proximity of vacant dwellings on both sides and an occupied dwelling in the rear prompted the call for a third alarm at 8:07 p.m.  For the most part, firefighters were able to contain the fire to structure of origin. The exposed structure on the left received light scorching to an exterior wall and debris in the bed of a neighboring pickup truck is believed to have caught fire from drifting embers, but firefighters quickly put out the fire before it could cause damage to the vehicle.  Neighbors reported seeing vagrants going in and out of the structure recently.  Firefighters performed primary and secondary searches of the dwelling but the buildings condition and a partial collapse limited full access.  The NOFD will leave a fire apparatus and crew on the scene on “fire-watch” throughout the night to protect against a possible rekindle.

 

In all 21 NOFD units carrying sixty-five suppression personnel were used to bring this fire under control at 8:26 p.m.  The New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Emergency Medical Services and the American Red Cross were all on the scene to assist in the mitigation of this incident.  There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
