Parade Rider Safety Positioning Devices

In response to the two unfortunate incidents of riders falling from parade floats during the Krewe of Alla parade, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) would like to remind all riders, krewe members and parade participants of the importance of wearing a safety positioning device (harness) that is tethered to the float or truck at all times.  NOFD members conduct inspections before every parade to insure that all floats and trucks follow safety standards and all safety protocols are in place.  This includes each float having a visible Safety & Permits Electrical Tag, required ladders, appropriate fire extinguishers and safety positioning devices for all riders.  It is the responsibility of Krewe Captains and each individual member to make sure safety positioning devices are worn properly and members remain tethered throughout the duration of the parade.  The NOFD believes that the safety positioning device is the equivalent of a vehicle’s seatbelt and should be treated and respected as such.  Accidents of individuals falling, like those at last Sunday’s Krewe of Alla parade, are preventable if all riders take on the responsibility protecting themselves and others by wearing their safety positioning devices properly.
