Three Alarm Fire in the 7th Ward
On Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 7:59 pm the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 911 call reporting a fire in a vacant double in the 2000 block of Annette St in the 7th Ward. The first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 8:04 pm finding a fully-involved dwelling at 2016-18 Annette St., a vacant, single-story, wood-framed shotgun double, with flames already threatening exposures on the left and right. A second alarm was called for immediately. Upon arrival the fire had already spread to the occupied double to the immediate left, 2012-14 Annette St., getting into the attic and causing significant damage to both homes. All residents at both addresses, three at 2014 and three along with four guests at 2012, were home at the time of the fire and managed to escape safely. Unfortunately one of the homeowner’s three cats at 2012 Annette St. did perish in the fire; firefighters were unable to locate the other two. The other exposure, a recently renovated single family home to the right of the fire building, suffered moderate fire damage to its exposed exterior wall and light smoke and water damage on the inside. Neighbors said the homeowner had been living with her son and had yet to move in.
Twenty-one NOFD units, carrying sixty-two suppression and support personnel, responded to this incident and there were no injuries reported. The fire was listed as under control at 8:45 pm. Several people in the neighborhood told NOFD investigators that the vacant property was frequented by homeless people. The NOFD is following up on that information in its ongoing investigation. The New Orleans Police Department and Entergy assisted in the mitigation of this incident. The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist the residents displaced by this fire with immediate shelter and clothing needs.
