NOFD Responds to Two-Alarm Fire in Algiers Strip Mall

On Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 9:12 am the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 911 call reporting a fire in a strip mall in the 4800 block of Gen. Meyer Ave. in Algiers. The first NOFD companies arrived on the scene of 4801 Gen. Meyer Avenue at 9:16 am, finding heavy smoke coming from the roof above one of the businesses in the strip mall. A second-alarm was requested at 9:29 am, out of fear that the fire could quickly spread through a common attic area above the businesses in the mall. For the most part, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the business of origin, the Algiers Sports Bar.  Three other businesses, Thousand Nails Salon, The Kitchen Restaurant and Honey Whip Donuts, all suffered moderate to heavy smoke damage.  The donut shot and nail salon were the only two businesses open at the time of the fire. 

 

Sixteen NOFD units carrying forty-six fire suppression and support personnel responded to this incident, bringing it under control at 9:53 am. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  The New Orleans Police Department and Entergy also assisted in the mitigation of this incident.
