Morning Rush Hour Fire Near the Corner of Claiborne and Ursulines Avenues

This morning, Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 8:14 a.m., the Orleans Parish Communications District (OPCD) received a 911 call reporting a fire in an occupied dwelling near the corner of Claiborne and Ursulines Avenues. Dispatched at 8:15 a.m., the first of eight New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) apparatuses and support vehicles arrived at 1709-11 Ursulines Ave at 8:18 a.m. The single resident of the property had already escaped safely prior to NOFD arrival. Firefighters quickly sprang into action using both interior and exterior attacks to contain the fire to its area of origin, in the rear of the home. They also did an excellent job of preventing the fire’s extension to a recently renovated home just a few feet away, at 1713 Ursulines Ave.

The incident’s proximity to Claiborne Ave and the elevated Interstate I-10 made for a high-profile incident that may have caused a little discomfort and anxiety to morning commuters. Twenty-five NOFD Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 8:48 a.m. The homeowner advised the NOFD Incident Commander that electrical contractors were present and working at the time the fire began. There were no injuries reported and a definitive cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of this release.
