NOFD Extinguishes Fire at Apartment Building in Lower Ninth Ward
On Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 12:46 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to the report of a building fire at 606 Egania St., in the Lower Ninth Ward. The first NOFD Fire Operations unit arrived at the three-story, nine-unit, wood-framed apartment building at 12:51 p.m. Upon arrival, the northeast corner of the second-floor balcony was heavily involved, with flames already extending into a common attic area above the second floor and the building’s third floor. Fireground conditions and life safety concerns prompted a request for a second alarm at 12:56 p.m. Of the buildings’ nine apartments, eight were occupied. Although firefighters were informed that all residents had evacuated safely or weren’t home at the time of the incident, firefighters still conducted a search of each apartment. A third alarm was requested at 1:59 p.m., mostly for relief purposes, providing a respite to first-up crews working in the 95* midday heat.
Twenty-one NOFD units, supported by sixty-two Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 1:35 p.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
