December 4, 2023 | From New Orleans Fire Department
As of 1:37 p.m. today, December 4, 2023, the wildland fire that had been smoldering below ground in New Orleans East just south of Chef Mentuer Hwy between the Michoud area and Venetian Isles, has been designated as extinguished. The New Orleans Fire Department and partnering agencies began winding down suppression efforts last week when a conservative estimate of ninety percent extinguished was given as the incident’s disposition. Beginning late last week and completed today, the NOFD withdrew from service and returned all mitigating assets (pumps, hoses, etc.) used to bring this incident under control. A month-long suppression effort and this past weekend’s heavy rains are attributed to the NOFD and its partners making this assessment. The New Orleans Fire Department would like to thank Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Army Corps of Engineers, the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Harvey Volunteer Fire Company # 2 for assisting in the mitigation of this incident.
