October 9, 2024 | From New Orleans Fire Department
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the New Orleans City Council approved an ordinance mandating the requirement that all one and two-family dwellings be equipped with Carbon Monoxide Alarms. The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) and our city’s Health Department (NOHD) are embarking on a partnership to supply and install “10yr Combination Carbon Monoxide (CO)/Smoke Alarms” to Orleans Parish residents “FREE OF CHARGE”. NOHD has been awarded a grant that allowed for the purchase of these 10yr Combination CO/Smoke Alarms. The NOFD has been installing 10yr smoke alarms, through its “Install Dat” Smoke Alarm Installation Program, in the homes of Orleans Parish residents for several years and already has the infrastructure in place to make this partnership a success and its roll-out seamless.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas often referred to as the “silent killer”. CO is released as a product of combustion, emitted from gas engines, gas and wood stoves, furnaces and heaters. Symptoms of CO exposure include headaches, weakness, nausea and shortness of breath. The request process for the “Combo CO/Smoke Alarm” is similar to that of the “Install Dat” 10yr smoke alarms and can be made by phone at 504-658-4714 or online at Services - Public Safety - Fire Safety - Get Free Smoke Alarms - City of New Orleans (nola.gov). Please designate that you are requesting a “Combination Alarm” in the “Additional Comments” section or the online request form. This program allots for only one Combo CO/Smoke Alarm on each level of a residence.
