NOFD Firefighters Subdue Mid-City Three-Alarm Fire

On Wednesday, November 27, 2022, at 2:17 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a call reporting a fire in the 200 block of N. Norman C. Francis Pkwy. NOFD Fire Operations personnel arrived on the scene at 2:21 a.m., finding two very large, muti-unit, two-story dwellings (4-plex at 216 North N.C. Francis & 3-plex at 224 North N.C. Francis) already heavily involved. According to the residents, all persons occupying the buildings were accounted for. A second alarm was quickly struck at 2:24 a.m., as firefighters began the process of suppressing the fire and keeping it contained to the buildings involved upon arrival. A third alarm was eventually requested at 2:48 a.m., as this large fire started to show the potential of extending to an occupied dwelling at 214 N. Norman C. Francis and three commercial buildings in the 3300 block of Bienville St.

It was determined through interviews with residents and the observation of burn patterns that the fire had begun in or near the first floor of the four-plex at 216 N. Norman C. Francis. Twenty-one NOFD units supported by fifty-two Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 5:16 a.m. Three residents were treated by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) and transported for further observation. Two adult females for smoke inhalation and an adult male for smoke inhalation and burns to his back suffered while re-entering 224 N. Norman C. Francis to successfully rescue his dog.

This fire was placed under control at 5:16 a.m. The New Orleans Police Department and Entergy Gas & Electric also participated in the mitigation of this incident. The American Red Cross has been requested to the scene to assist the fifteen residents of both apartment buildings displaced by this incident. There were no firefighter injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
