Several Pets Rescued During Two-Alarm Fire

On Friday, March 21, 2025, at 8:44 the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported residential fire in the 4800 block of St. Claude Ave. NOFD Fire Operations personnel arrived at scene of 4807 St. Claude Ave., a large two-story, wood framed, single-family dwelling, at 8:50 a.m., finding the upstairs rear of the home already heavily involved in flames. A second alarm was requested almost immediately at 8:51 a.m.

The couple that lived at the address (adult male and female), told firefighters that they were okay, but there were several pets still trapped inside. One pig, two dogs and at least four cats were believed trapped in different areas of the home. A third dog was rescued by a neighbor prior to NOFD arrival. A very large pig was the first of the pets rescued, pulled from the rear of the home by firefighters. A large dog was found hiding under a bed in an upstairs bedroom. A cat was also found hiding upstairs. A second cat jumped out of a first-floor window and ran underneath the home once the fire was brought under control. Unfortunately, one dog was confirmed deceased and at least two cats were unaccounted for. The surviving pets were all treated with oxygen by NOFD personnel and later evaluated by a responding Louisiana SPCA representative.

Twenty-one NOFD units, supported by fifty-three NOFD Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 9:54 a.m. There was one other occupied dwelling involved. An exterior wall of a neighboring duplex, 4821 St. Claude Ave., received moderate damage from radiant heat. According to the residents at 4807 St. Claude, they believe the fire was started by candles being burned in the upstairs rear of the dwelling. An NOFD Fire Investigator has still been called to the scene to try and make a definitive confirmation of cause and origin. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported. Entergy and the New Orleans Police Department also assisted in the mitigation of this incident.
