The NOFD Responds to a Partial Building Collapse at 520 St. Louis St.

On Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 12:49 p.m., 911 communications personnel were notified of a partial building collapse in the 500 block of St. Louis Street. Dispatched at 12:50 p.m., the first unit of New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) personnel arrived at the incident scene, 520 St. Louis Street, at 12:52 p.m. Concrete and brick fascia materials, as well as roofing members of the Kurt E. Schon, LTD Bldg., a four-story, mixed-use masonry structure, had fallen onto the street and sidewalk. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or vehicles in harm’s way at the time. Contractors were repairing and replacing the building’s gutter system when the incident occurred.

The Schon Bldg. houses an art studio on the first floor and five apartments on the upper three floors. Of the three occupied apartments, only one resident was home at the time. The city’s Office of Code Enforcement and Safety and Permits were on the scene and determined that the contractors on sight will be allowed to remove all building materials that pose any immediate risk to further collapse. The 500 block of St. Louis Street will remain closed until this incident has been mitigated and deemed safe for public access.
