Two-Alarm Fire on Kerlerec Street

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 4:02 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a reported structure fire at 1018 and 1020 Kerlerec Street. The first units arrived at 4:08 p.m. to find heavy fire extending to the attic of this one-story wood framed double. A second alarm was struck, and search-and-rescue operations were initiated.
Both residents were safely accounted for, with one alerted by a working smoke alarm. The fire was brought under control at 4:35 p.m. with no injuries reported. Investigators determined an electrical outlet malfunction to be the cause.
Working smoke alarms continue to save lives. This incident is a strong reminder for every household to test alarms regularly and ensure they are functioning properly.
Sixteen NOFD units, supported by forty-one Fire Operations personnel, were used to bring this incident under control.
