Two-Alarm Fire Destroys Unoccupied Dwelling in the 6000 Block of Painters St.
On Friday, September 5, 2025, at 7:59 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported fire in the 2500 block of Madrid St. At 8:07 p.m. the first-up engine company arrived at the intersection of Painters and Madrid Streets, finding a single-family dwelling almost completely involved in flames. Unaware of whether the home was occupied, and with flames already extending to neighboring occupied homes, a second alarm was struck at 8:08 p.m. After questioning neighbors, it was determined that the original fire building (6040 Painters St.) was unoccupied. Firefighters then began the process of trying to keep the fire contained to the building of origin and protecting the exposed occupied dwellings on three sides of the fire.
Seventeen NOFD units, supported by forty-six Fire Operations personnel, were used to bring this incident under control at 9:18 p.m. The original fire building, 6040 Painters St., was almost completely destroyed in the fire. The occupied single-family dwelling to the immediate left, 6034 Painters St., received extensive damage and had at least two vehicles destroyed by this fire. Homes at 6100 Painters St. and 2524 Madrid St. received mild to moderate damage, mostly melted siding on exterior walls. There were no injuries reported the cause of the fire is currently being investigated. At the time of this release, NOFD Fire Operations personnel were inspecting the home at 6034 Painters St. to determine whether its six residents would be able to reside in their or must seek shelter elsewhere tonight.
