NOFD Urges Home Heating Safety as Cooler Weather Arrives

As temperatures begin to drop across southeast Louisiana, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) is reminding residents to take extra precautions when heating their homes. Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires during cold weather months, and following simple safety measures can prevent tragedy.

“Colder weather often means people are using space heaters, fireplaces, and other heating sources more frequently,” said Superintendent Roman Nelson of the New Orleans Fire Department. “We want everyone to stay warm, but to do so safely.”

The NOFD offers the following heating safety tips:

Electric Space Heaters

  • Inspect cords before each use. If damaged, do not use the heater.
  • Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  • Unplug space heaters when not in use or before leaving the room.

Heating Sources

  • Clean and vacuum floor furnaces before use.
  • Ensure gas heaters are properly ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup.
  • Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.

Woodstoves & Fireplaces

  • Burn only dry, seasoned wood.
  • Open the chimney flue before lighting a fire.
  • Use a protective screen to contain sparks and embers.

By following these simple safety steps, residents can reduce the risk of fire and keep their homes both safe and warm this season.
