NOFD RESPONDS TO TWO-ALARM FIRE IN ALGIERS

On Thursday, January 1, 2026, at 10:44 P.M., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to 4545 Macarthur Blvd. in Algiers. Upon arrival, companies discovered a fire in an apartment building on the rear first floor of the structure. Given the potential for fire extension and the number of residents who may have been present, the on-scene Chief requested a second alarm and ordered an evacuation of the complex. NOFD members successfully rescued one male occupant from a rear first-floor window. That individual was transported by NOEMS to a local hospital. Firefighters also rescued two (2) cats from the unit that caught fire but were unable to save an additional four (4), who unfortunately perished in the fire. The responding companies contained the fire to six (6) affected units, bringing the incident under control without further extension to adjacent structures. There was one (1) injury reported at the time of the incident; however, fourteen (14) people were displaced. The incident was placed under control at 11:49 P.M.
