Resident Jumps from Second Floor Window to Avoid Two-Alarm Fire

On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 12:01 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported dwelling fire in the 3400 block of Milan St. The first of nineteen NOFD Fire Operations units, supported by fifty-two firefighters, arrived on the scene 3415 Milan St. at 12:07 p.m. Considering the severity of the fire and the close proximity of occupied exposures, a second alarm was requested at 12:10. Upon arrival, firefighters were also notified that the home was clear of all occupants and that prior firefighters arriving, a 37yr old male had jumped from a second floor window to escape the fire.

The homeowners, the parents of the man that escaped through the second-floor window, told firefighters that a space heater was the probable cause of the fire. The homeowners told NOFD personnel that just prior to being transported to an area hospital for injuries to his feet, their son explained to them that the space heater he was using started the fire. The NOFD will conduct a formal investigation to confirm the cause. There were no other firefighter or civilian injuries reported, and the incident was listed as “Under Control” at 12:49 p.m. The American Red Cross has been requested to the scene to assist the three people displaced by this incident with primary needs. It must be noted that NOFD Fire Operations personnel did an excellent job of keeping the fire contained to the original fire building, a two-story single-family dwelling. The occupied two-story multi-unit dwellings to the left and right of the fire building received only mild to moderate damage from radiant heat.
