April 21, 2026 | From New Orleans Fire Department
A fire underneath the Interstate-610 overpass, between Paris and St. Bernard Avenues, prompted the closure of I-610 during this morning’s rush hour commute. Today, Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 6:21 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported “outside fire” in the 1500 block of Pleasure St. This is the location of the Parisite Skatepark, 1550 Pleasure St. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a large wooden skate ramp heavily involved with flames extending up to the structural members of the elevated interstate. The imminent dangers to overhead-vehicular traffic caused the immediate closure of this section I-610 in both directions. During fire suppression operations, firefighters noticed the spalling (cracking and flaking) of the interstate’s structural members. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development was called out to inspect the structural integrity of this section of I-610 after the incident was placed under control. I-610 has since been reopened to traffic in both directions with no restrictions. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
