Three-Alarm Fire on Napoleon Avenue Displaces Five Residents

On Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 6:47 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported fire at 2229 Napoleon Avenue. The first NOFD unit arrived at the scene at 6:53 p.m., witnessing heavy flames on the second floor of a three-story apartment building. A second alarm was requested at 6:58 p.m. because of the size of the building and the amount of fire involved. A third alarm was then requested at 7:32 p.m. for staffing and support. As the fire spread, crews were forced to evacuate the building and take a defensive posture to protect the adjacent buildings and fight the fire from the outside. Companies performed a primary search of the unburned apartments in the rear of the building. The fire was placed under control at 9:48 p.m. Twenty-seven (27) NOFD units, supported by approximately seventy-one (71) Fire Operations personnel, were dispatched to this incident. A total of five residents were displaced from three apartments, and they are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross. Firefighters rescued two cats from the building and remain in search of a third cat. No injuries were reported among residents. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for a heat-related illness. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
