Communications Division

Emergency Response Coordination

Through our partnership with the Orleans Parish Communications District (OPCD), we maintain round-the-clock emergency response capabilities. OPCD manages our state-of-the-art Computer Aided Dispatch System, handling both 911 emergency calls and non-emergency communications. During special events and emergencies, OPCD operates a dedicated Emergency Communications Center (Base-9).

Our Electronics Section supports these efforts by maintaining the department's critical radio communications infrastructure, ensuring reliable contact between dispatch and field units.

Special Operations Division

The Special Operations Division manages NOPD's elite specialized units that handle high-risk situations and specialized enforcement operations across New Orleans.

Specialized Units

  • Violent Offender Warrant Squad coordinates with Crimestoppers and the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force to apprehend suspects with outstanding warrants for violent crimes.
  • Tactical Platoons 1 & 2 serve as NOPD's primary SWAT teams, executing high-risk warrants for serious crimes including terrorism, homicide, and narcotics. When not deployed on warrants, these officers conduct proactive patrols in high-crime areas.
  • Bomb Disposal Unit identifies and neutralizes suspicious packages and improvised explosive devices. This FBI-accredited team secures areas during VIP visits and responds to all explosive-related threats.
  • Armory Unit maintains all departmental weapons and chemical munitions while providing specialized tactical training and evaluating new law enforcement technologies.
  • Search and Rescue/Marine Unit operates NOPD's fleet of 35 vessels for water-based search, rescue, and recovery operations throughout Orleans Parish waters, working closely with the Coast Guard on maritime law enforcement.
  • Extradition Unit handles the secure transport of fugitives wanted in Orleans Parish from jurisdictions across the country.
  • K-9 Unit deploys specially-trained police dogs to assist with suspect apprehension, narcotics detection, and explosives detection.
  • Traffic Fatality Unit conducts technical investigations of vehicle accidents resulting in death or serious injury, performing detailed crash reconstruction.
  • DWI Unit focuses on detecting and apprehending impaired drivers through specialized enforcement and testing protocols.
