The Office of Violence Prevention is responsible for leading the city’s intervention and reduction strategies by coordinating partnerships with health care institutions, community organizations, service providers, and academic experts to prevent violence and promote peace. Our commitment is to foster a collaborative ecosystem where public health approaches drive innovative solutions to reduce violence, support victims, and create a resilient city where every individual can thrive without fear. Our programs emphasize cultural competence in their service delivery, ensuring that all individuals receive support that is respectful of their backgrounds and values.

Our Programs

Community Violence Prevention

Peace Ambassadors from Ubuntu Village work directly in neighborhoods to mediate conflicts and promote peaceful resolution. The Center for Restorative Approaches provides community-based solutions that address the root causes of violence.

Healthcare Response

Our Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program meets victims at a crucial moment - right after injury - to break the cycle of violence. The Trauma Recovery Center provides comprehensive care to help survivors heal and prevent future violence.

Support Services

ThriveKids offers essential mental health support for young people affected by violence. Our specialized programs address domestic violence, sexual assault, and gun safety education to create a comprehensive safety net for our community.

Today, the New Orleans Health Department’s (NOHD) Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program (DV/SA), in coordination with the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), the New Orleans Family Justice Center (NOFJC), and the Orleans Parish Communications District (OPCD), released the 2024 Advocate Initiated Response (AIR) Program Data Report. This comprehensive report offers a data-driven assessment of the city’s current domestic violence response and highlights both the urgent challenges and practical steps that city agencies and partners can take together to better protect survivors, hold offenders accountable, and improve coordination across the system.

Statement on mass shooting

This weekend, our city faced another tragic act of violence that occurred in our neighborhoods. Our thoughts, prayers and support continue to go out to the victims, families, and everyone else who has, in some way, been impacted.

The Office of Violence Prevention is housed within the New Orleans Health Department, because we recognize violence as a public health crisis. Our commitment is to work tirelessly on finding solutions for those affected by violence, as violence is a collective problem that hurts us all.
