Crescent City Crossing: Safe Routes to School

The Crescent City Crossing initiative is dedicated to improving safety for students traveling to and from school. Our goal is to ensure every child has a safe route to and from school, supported by trained and equipped crossing guards.

Free Crossing Guard Training from NOPD

To strengthen safety efforts, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) now offers FREE Crossing Guard Training for schools and community partners. This training covers:

  • Proper crossing guard techniques
  • Traffic safety protocols
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Best practices for student safety

Why Training Matters:
Crossing guards play a critical role in preventing injuries and ensuring safe passage for students. Training ensures consistency, confidence, and compliance with city safety standards.

Free Crossing Guard Supplies

Schools interested in receiving FREE crossing guard supplies—including reflective vests, stop signs, and standing crosswalk signs—must complete the NOPD Crossing Guard Training. Supplies will be distributed at the training session, so participants leave fully prepared to start their duties.

School Safety Audits

The New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) offers FREE School Safety Audits to help identify infrastructure and education priority areas. These audits assess:

  • Infrastructure Needs: Crosswalks, signage, traffic calming measures, and lighting
  • Education Gaps: Opportunities for student, parent, and staff safety education
  • High-Risk Zones: Areas where additional enforcement or engineering improvements are needed

Why Get an Audit?
Audits help NOHD and the City of New Orleans prioritize resources and interventions where they are needed most—making your school community safer.
