Understanding the Flu

What is Influenza?

The flu is a respiratory virus that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. When infected, you may experience fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Don't hesitate to contact your doctor if you develop these symptoms, as early treatment can make a significant difference.

Seasonal Patterns

Flu season typically spans from October to May, with the highest number of cases occurring during January and February. However, the exact timing can vary from year to year, making early vaccination important for protection throughout the season.

Prevention Essentials

Protecting yourself and others from the flu involves several simple but effective steps. Regular hand washing plays a crucial role in preventing transmission. When you cough or sneeze, use your arm or a tissue to cover your mouth. If you become ill, staying home helps prevent spreading the virus to others. For parents, keep children home until they've been fever-free for at least 24 hours.

Vaccination Information

Getting Vaccinated

The flu vaccine provides safe and effective protection for everyone six months and older. It's important to understand that the vaccine cannot cause the flu. For children under 8 receiving their first flu shot, a two-dose series is necessary for full protection.

Nasal Spray Alternative

Some people may prefer the nasal spray vaccine, which is available for healthy individuals between ages 2 and 49 who aren't pregnant. Your healthcare provider can help determine if this option suits your needs.

Priority Groups

While vaccination benefits everyone, certain groups face higher risks from flu complications. These include young children between 6 months and 5 years, adults over 50, and people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes. Pregnant individuals, those with weakened immune systems, and residents of long-term care facilities should prioritize getting vaccinated. American Indian and Alaska Native persons and individuals with severe obesity also face increased risk.

Access to Vaccination

Finding Your Vaccine

Getting your flu shot is convenient and accessible. Most local pharmacies and doctor's offices offer the vaccine. You can easily locate nearby providers using the HealthMap Vaccine Finder website. Our Vax & Go clinics provide additional opportunities for free vaccination throughout the season.

Personal Guidance
