Safer Streets Ahead: Pedestrian Safety Upgrades Along N. Rampart & N. Peters Streets
The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW), in partnership with the French Quarter Management District (FQMD), has completed a series of upgrades to make N. Rampart Street and N. Peters Street safer and more welcoming for everyone who walks, bikes, or drives through the area.
The improvements include:
- Bright Green Bike Lanes – Painted along N. Rampart from Toulouse to St. Philip to create a more visible, protected space for bicyclists.
- 60 High-Visibility Flex Posts – Installed to create a visual buffer along the bike lane, improving safety for cyclists.
- Brick-Red Painted Corner Zones – Enhances visibility at five intersections to alert drivers and reduce conflict points.
- Pedestrian-Activated Flashing Beacons – Two new ADA-compliant beacons were installed at St. Philip Street and St. Ann Street to help pedestrians safely cross near Armstrong Park.
- “Stop for Pedestrians” Signs – More than a dozen new signs now line N. Rampart and N. Peters, reminding drivers to yield at crosswalks.
These improvements strengthen walkability in one of New Orleans’ most historic districts, protect residents, businesses, and visitors by reducing risk at key crossings, and support Vision Zero, the City’s initiative to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. Together, these upgrades make the French Quarter safer, more connected, and more welcoming for everyone, whether you’re commuting to work, enjoying a night out, or visiting Armstrong Park.
📍 Next time you’re on N. Rampart or N. Peters, check out the new signs, slow down, and help keep our streets safe by stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks.
