TRAFFIC ADVISORY UPDATE: Westbound Interstate 10 Lane Closure Rescheduled

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans advises motorists that the previously announced Interstate 10 Westbound lane closure scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2026, has been rescheduled.

The closure will now take place on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. During that time, the right lane on Interstate 10 Westbound between Ransom Street and the base of the High-Rise Bridge will be closed. The closure will also include the westbound Interstate 10 entrance ramp from U.S. Highway 90 (Chef Menteur Highway).

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: CLOSURE ON FILMORE AVENUE

NEW ORLEANS - The City of New Orleans announced that beginning Monday, June 15, 2026, the Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor, CMG Pipelines, Inc., will temporarily close both lanes of Filmore Avenue from Canal Boulevard to Argonne Boulevard to excavate pits and prepare for sewer work on Filmore Avenue. During this period, residents are encouraged to utilize alternate travel routes when possible.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: SINGLE LANE CLOSURE ON PALMETTO STREET AT CHERRY STREET

The City of New Orleans announced that beginning Monday, June 15, 2026, Department of Public Works (DPW), in partnership with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans and Barriere Construction, will begin utility work and roadway work as part of the BW Cooper, Gert Town, Dixon Group A & D infrastructure project. Traffic flow on north-bound Palmetto Street will shift from two lanes to one lane at the intersection of Cherry Street. During this period, residents are encouraged to utilize alternate travel routes when possible.

• Palmetto Street (Mistletoe Street - Cherry Street)

This work is part of the $16.6M BW Cooper, Gert Town, Dixon Group A and D joint infrastructure project between the Department of Public Works and the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans. Once complete, residents will experience improved drainage, repaired streets, curbs, and sidewalks, and the installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps at intersections. The project is scheduled to be fully completed by Fall 2027, weather permitting. Construction Roadway Closure on Annunciation St (Race St to Melpomene St)

NEW ORLEANS – Beginning on Monday, June 22, 2026, the City of New Orleans, Office of  Stormwater & Green Infrastructure’s  contractor, RNDG Infrastructure, LLC., will begin a temporary closure the 1300-1400 blocks of Annunciation St (CBD bound) from Race St to Melpomene St for approximately fourteen (14) weeks to accommodate underground utility installation as part of the DPS01 Watershed (Broadmoor HMGP) Drainage Upgrades and Green Infrastructure Project (Phase I) construction project. Public safety is our top priority; signage and traffic control measures will be onsite to direct drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.  All businesses in the area will remain open and accessible.

During this closure, traffic will be rerouted to Constance St or Tchoupitoulas St. Residents and businesses in this area have been notified of the closure via text message and notification canvass.

City of New Orleans Plans Bold, Coordinated Action to Reduce Traffic Deaths and Serious Injuries

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Mayor Helena Moreno today announced a major step toward transforming street safety across New Orleans following this week’s signing of the Safe Streets Executive Order, a directive that formally adopts the city's Safety Action Plan (SAP), a comprehensive, data‑driven roadmap designed to reduce severe and fatal traffic crashes. 

The initiative is part of the city’s broader transportation safety agenda and a data-driven roadmap aimed at cutting deadly and serious crashes in half by 2031 and ultimately eliminating traffic deaths on New Orleans streets.

Eastbound Morrison Road Closure for Improvement Project Begins February 16

The City of New Orleans announced today that the Department of Public Works (DPW), in coordination with contractor RNGD, will close eastbound Morrison Road between Mayo Boulevard and Bundy Road beginning February 16, 2026, as construction begins on the DPW574 Morrison Road Improvement Project.

Mayor Helena Moreno Announces New In-House Paving Unit to Accelerate Basic Street Construction

NEW ORLEANS — Today, Mayor Helena Moreno illustrated her commitment to rapidly improving the delivery of basic infrastructure services by announcing a capital budget ordinance allocating $6.25 million for street paving projects.

Using funds identified from the unused portion of bonds from 2019-2024, the city will invest in paving equipment, street maintenance equipment, and a dedicated workforce to perform street repairs.

City Council Unanimously Advances Mayor Moreno’s Pick for Public Works Director

NEW ORLEANS – Today, the New Orleans City Council Governmental Affairs Committee has voted to advance the appointment of Steve Nelson as the Director of the Department of Public Works. 

Nelson’s nomination highlights Mayor Helena Moreno’s commitment to a “Fix the Basics” strategy, providing a comprehensive overhaul of how the city’s infrastructural issues are tackled. Nelson serves as both the city’s Deputy CAO for Infrastructure, as well as nominee for Director of Public Works. He is responsible for maintaining and improving the city’s streets, sidewalks, streetlights, traffic signals, parking enforcement, and public right-of-way infrastructure.

Mayor Moreno and City Council launch major initiative to repair lighting across the city 

Today, Mayor Helena Moreno and the New Orleans City Council announced a $2.8M investment to urgently repair lighting around the city. Prioritized projects include the High Rise bridge in New Orleans East, Interstate 10 and other major routes. Repairs for lighting will also include converting some lighting to solar and aluminum to eliminate the threat of copper theft which has plagued the lighting infrastructure in New Orleans. In addition to repairs across the city, a portion of the funding will be utilized to hire a few electricians within the Department of Public Works to do minor repairs within city buildings. Currently, most minor electrical work is being contracted out. This is more costly.  

The funding for this effort comes from a 2018 penalty fine the City Council imposed on Entergy New Orleans for deceptive practices during their efforts to build the New Orleans Power Station. A portion of the $5M fine for what was called the “Paid Actors Scandal” has been spent over time by the City Council, yet $2.8M remains.
