TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Impacts on Prytania Street for Right-of-Way Improvements

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) announces that beginning Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 7:00 a.m., crews will begin right-of-way improvements on Prytania Street between Peniston Street and Delachaise Street in the Touro area.

Mayor Moreno Launches Two Major Initiatives for Faster Street Maintenance

Today, Mayor Helena Moreno announced two major initiatives to begin expediting street repairs in New Orleans. First, the Mayor directed the Department of Public Works (DPW) to start lessening dependence on contractors and begin handling more minor sidewalk and street repairs in-house by DPW crews. Second, she has launched the Infrastructure Coordinating Council to help expedite major street infrastructure projects similar to the group formed during the Super Bowl to ensure that there’s coordination, collaboration, and urgency to complete projects.

City of New Orleans Begins "Lights On" Initiative in New Orleans East as Part of Mayor Moreno’s Public Safety Priorities

On her second day in office, Mayor Helena Moreno joined Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Michael Harrison, Deputy CAO of Infrastructure Stephen Nelson, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, Councilmember Jason Hughes, and New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick in New Orleans East to mark the first step of her Lights On initiative. The effort is a cornerstone of the mayor’s 100-day priorities and reflects a whole-of-government approach to public safety and infrastructure challenges in underserved communities.

City officials were on site Tuesday, January 13, outside of the Huntington Park Apartments on Crowder and the I-10 Service Road. This stretch of five to ten blocks highlights the recently completed lighting improvements. City leaders discussed the public safety and infrastructure coordination efforts. Repairs took place at nearby Willows Apartments.

“We recognize this is a public safety issue, and we’re taking the first of many steps to address crime in New Orleans East,” said Mayor Helena Moreno. “New Orleans East has been ignored for way too long. Not anymore!” Mayor Moreno shared.

Mayor Helena Moreno to Kick Off Citywide Lighting Improvements with “Lights On” Event In New Orleans East

Mayor Helena Moreno will join District Attorney Jason Williams, Councilmember Jason Hughes, along with her executive leadership team, in New Orleans East at the Willows to highlight her longtime efforts to improve lighting across the city and kick off her “Lights On” initiative. This effort will highlight the public safety and quality of life improvements that come with functioning city lighting, one of the ways she intends to improve basic services as mayor in collaboration, as well as her commitment to collaboration with the City Council and public safety leaders like District Attorney Williams.  

The event is but the first step of “Lights On,” a cornerstone of her 100-day priorities, focused on improving public safety and delivering coordinated infrastructure improvements in every neighborhood of New Orleans.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Lane Shift in the Southbound Lane of Johnny Jackson Jr. Boulevard

The City of New Orleans announced that beginning Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 a.m., the Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor Hard Rock Construction will temporarily execute a lane shift to vehicular traffic for approximately two months to accommodate utility construction on the Southbound Lane of Johnny Jackson Jr. Boulevard between Abundance Street and Florida Avenue. This lane shift is necessary to complete essential subsurface utility installation and repairs between the 2700, 2800, and 2900 blocks of Johnny Jackson Jr. Boulevard in accordance with the RR403 NOFOG Project.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS IMPLEMENTS TEMPORARY ST. CHARLES AVENUE LANE CLOSURES AS PART OF MARDI GRAS PUBLIC SAFETY PREPARATIONS

As part of ongoing Mardi Gras public safety preparations, the City of New Orleans will temporarily close the left travel lane on St. Charles Avenue to support upcoming security measures.

THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS ACTIVATES FREEZE PLAN 

The City of New Orleans today announced that it will activate the Citywide Freeze Plan (CFP) overnight on Sunday, Dec. 14 in anticipation of cold weather.     

    

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts "feels like" temperatures at or below freezing during overnight hours. This projected range is within the CFP activation threshold of below 35 degrees Fahrenheit (inclusive of wind chill) for over four hours.  There are no watches or warnings anticipated with this event.     

    

The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) is coordinating closely with NWS and will update residents via NOLA Ready if the likelihood of local impacts from winter weather increases. A Hard Freeze is not expected in New Orleans at this time, but residents should be prepared to protect people, pets and plants from the cold.

DPW Cares: Employees Rally Together to Donate Items for Holiday Food Drive 

As Thanksgiving approached, DPW employees came together to support neighbors facing food insecurity across Greater New Orleans by collecting donations for the Second Harvest Food Drive. Thanks to their generosity and teamwork, the department exceeded its goal by collecting 125 food items, demonstrating DPW’s ongoing commitment to serving the community.
