Overview: The Andrew Higgins Drive corridor, located in New Orleans' Warehouse District, is undergoing a redesign aimed at improving the pedestrian and vehicle experience. The proposed project will narrow travel lanes, enhance pedestrian safety, and add aesthetic elements such as brick paving, benches, and vegetation. This redesign also includes the addition of curb extensions and bump-outs at key intersections, particularly at Tchoupitoulas Street, to increase pedestrian safety. Traffic flow is not expected to change drastically, but narrower streets may lead to slower vehicle speeds and fewer trucks on the road.
Project Scope:
Sidewalk improvements: Brick sidewalks with mid-block curb extensions to include space for street furniture, plantings and light fixtures
Bump-outs and curb extensions: Increased pedestrian safety providing an additional 6.5 feet of sidewalk at intersections and selected mid-block locations
Vegetation: Trees, shrubs and groundcover to be incorporated into the sidewalk space
Signalization: No new signals planned; existing stop signs may be replaced if necessary
