Together New Orleans, a broad-based coalition of congregations and community-based organizations, today installed solar panels at the Christian Unity Baptist Church (1700 Conti St.), marking the near completion of the organization’s 11th Community Lighthouse in New Orleans and the sixth location utilizing funds from the City of New Orleans. This installation comes at the start of hurricane season, which weather forecasters predict could be the most active season in the Atlantic on record.

On May 15, Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced that the City of New Orleans was selected to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ new Youth Climate Action Fund, which will provide technical assistance and funding to activate tens of thousands of young people ages 15 – 24 to design, produce and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe. New Orleans joined the Fund alongside cities from around the world, which together spans 38 countries across six continents, representing over 62 million residents.

The City of New Orleans was recently awarded $398,500 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Compost and Food Waste Reduction Program (CFWR) to increase the capacity of local composting organizations that will make it more accessible for residents. Local organizations working on food waste reduction and composting programs partnered on the proposal with the City, including Sprout NOLA, Schmelly’s Dirt Farm, REALCYCLE, Compost NOW and Taproot Earth.

The City of New Orleans is the recipient of a $381,471 award from the U.S. Department of Energy through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The City will utilize these dollars to promote the adoption of solar power systems and energy efficiency measures through programs and financial incentives now available through the federal government.

The City of New Orleans is set to receive a $4.1 million federal funding appropriation for the redevelopment of Lincoln Beach, secured by U.S. Congressman Troy Carter. This allocation is part of the overall $24.6 million funding dedicated to bringing Lincoln Beach back to New Orleans East.

The City of New Orleans is the recipient of a $61.5 million award from the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Program from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve safety and mobility along the I-10 Service Roads in New Orleans East. These funds will be used to construct shared-use trails along the North and South Service Roads, trail connections at the existing interchanges, new non-motorized bridges crossings of the interstate and lighting along the Service Roads.

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced that Blue Krewe, a local nonprofit that operates and manages Blue Bikes, is adding 300 new, pedal-assist e-bikes to the fleet. The new shipment will grow the current fleet to more than 800 bikes available for residents.
