Adopt a Catch Basin

The City of New Orleans is responsible for cleaning and maintaining 72,000 catch basins to prevent pollution from entering Lake Pontchartrain and reducing the risk of street flooding due to clogged catch basins.

The City’s Adopt a Catch Basin program enables residents to participate in this effort by adopting a catch basin in their neighborhood. Many residents want to adopt their catch basin to reduce the likelihood of flooding in their neighborhoods.

Catch Basin

Participants select a catch basin on the Adopt-A-Catchbasin (nola.gov) web map, adopt it, and give it a name. Their adoption is a simple commitment to sweep the debris (leaves, trash, and dirt) from in front of the catch basin and dispose of the items in a garbage can with a secure lid. The interactive map allows volunteers to report the dates on which they cleaned their catch basins.
