Recycling

Why Recycling Matters in New Orleans

Louisiana ranks 49th in the country for its recycling performance, and New Orleans’ recycling rates mirror those of the entire state. Roughly 2-4% of all the materials New Orleanians consume are recycled, which leaves us with significant opportunities for improvement. Due to lack of sufficient funding, the City has until now used an opt-in model for curbside recycling where residents can call 311 to request a recycling cart.

What Can I Recycle?

In your curbside recycling cart, you can recycle:

  • cardboard (no pizza boxes)
  • mixed paper (no photographs)
  • aluminum and tin cans
  • plastic containers and jugs.

Do not place plastic bags, bubble wrap, or any other soft plastics in your recycling cart. Please reference nola.gov/recycling to learn more about what is and is not accepted in your recycling cart. For recyclable items that are not accepted in our curbside program, you can visit the Elysian Fields Recycling Drop Off Center 2829 Elysian Fields Ave, which is open weekly on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m to Orleans Parish residents.

Need to Order a Recycling Cart?

We currently offer curbside recycling as an opt-in service. Even though we all pay for recycling in our residential sanitation fee, only 43-45% of the City so far has opted in to receive their cart through 3-1-1. Unfortunately, apartments are not eligible for curbside recycling through the city. If you live in an apartment and would like to have recycling offered, please contact your property manager and make that request through them. Here's how you can opt in if you have not already done so.

Step 1. Go to nola311.org.

Step 2. Click "Submit 3-1-1 Request" button.

Step 3. Click "Submit New Service Request" button.

Step 4. Fill out the form, including your name, email, phone number, and address. Use the drop down menu for "Request Type" to select "Trash/Recycling."

Step 5. Click on the "Request Reason" drop-down menu, scroll down and click "Order Recycling Cart."

Step 6. Make sure you click the blue "Save" button in the top right corner.
