Located between the Lafitte Greenway and Orleans Avenue in the Mid-City neighborhood, the 33-acre Hagan-Lafitte site is comprised of one neighborhood park and 23-blocks of residential and commercial blocks. This project area stretches from Bayou St. John to Broad Street. Due to the nature of recurring flooding in the project area, it has been deemed necessary to utilize a mix of “gray” and “green” drainage infrastructure.
The 23 blocks in this project site collectively share almost 60 raingardens between them, each designed with curb cuts to allow for water entry from the street. The raingardens are planted with native grasses and plants like Muhly grass and Dwarf palmettos and topped with pine needle mulch to maintain healthy soils for the plants. These plants will absorb and filter the water, helping keep it out of the street.
Between Lopez St and Rendon St, Easton Park has been retrofitted to include a massive water storage tank underneath it, which receives excess rainwater during severe storm events.
