New Orleans Awarded FTA Transit-Oriented Development Grant to Support Equitable Growth Along Planned Bus Rapid Transit Corridor

 The Regional Transit Authority (RTA), in partnership with the City of New Orleans’ Office of Resilience & Sustainability (ORS) and City Planning Commission (CPC), has been awarded a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning Program grant. The funding, part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s $105 million investment in public transit resilience, will support New Orleans' Equitable Transit-Oriented Communities (ETOC) project. The ETOC planning study aims to support New Orleans’ Climate Action Plan goals and to revitalize underutilized land along the 15-mile East-West Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, which will connect neighborhoods in New Orleans East and the West Bank to the city's downtown area. Funds from the grant will support procurement of a professional consulting team specializing in market analysis, community and economic development, engineering, and public involvement.

City of New Orleans Receives $1.7 Million Federal Grant to Expand Blue Bikes Fleet and Workforce Development

The City of New Orleans, through the Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS), has been awarded $1.7 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through the Communities Sparking Investment in Transformative Energy (C-SITE) program. This is part of a $31 million announcement funding 12 Tribes and local governments to implement clean energy projects that spark investments and provide community benefits. The funds will be used to expand the city's Blue Bikes fleet and establish a comprehensive workforce development program, creating new opportunities for residents and supporting New Orleans’ Climate Action Plan goals. This initiative is particularly important for a city like New Orleans, where nearly 1 in 5 households do not have access to their own vehicle.

EPA Announces Funding for City of New Orleans, Dillard University and United Way of Southeast Louisiana

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the City of New Orleans will receive $49.9 million from the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program (CPRG) to implement community-driven solutions that tackle the climate crisis. This significant funding will support the implementation of critical greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures over the next five years, reinforcing New Orleans’ commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Additionally, it was announced that $19.9 million in community grant funding will be awarded to Dillard University and their partner United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA).

City of New Orleans Announces Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund Project Winners

Mayor LaToya Cantrell yesterday was joined by Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families (OYF) Director Asya Howlette, Office of Resilience & Sustainability (ORS) Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols, Greater New Orleans Foundation, community organizations and youth project leaders to announce the nine winning projects that will receive funding from the Youth Climate Action Fund, sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the City of New Orleans has been awarded $49.9 million under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) Program. This significant funding will support the implementation of critical greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures over the next five years, reinforcing New Orleans’ commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. New Orleans is honored to be one of only three cities to receive funding through this program.

Together New Orleans Launches 11th Community Lighthouse in New Orleans to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Together New Orleans, a broad-based coalition of congregations and community-based organizations, today installed solar panels at the Christian Unity Baptist Church (1700 Conti St.), marking the near completion of the organization’s 11th Community Lighthouse in New Orleans and the sixth location utilizing funds from the City of New Orleans. This installation comes at the start of hurricane season, which weather forecasters predict could be the most active season in the Atlantic on record.

On May 15, Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced that the City of New Orleans was selected to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ new Youth Climate Action Fund, which will provide technical assistance and funding to activate tens of thousands of young people ages 15 – 24 to design, produce and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe. New Orleans joined the Fund alongside cities from around the world, which together spans 38 countries across six continents, representing over 62 million residents.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell today announced that the City of New Orleans will join Bloomberg Philanthropies’ new Youth Climate Action Fund, which will provide technical assistance and funding to activate tens of thousands of young people ages of 15 – 24 years to design, produce and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe. With 84 percent of youth around the world reporting that they are worried climate change threatens people and the planet, this initiative grants young people the opportunity to get directly involved in tackling this global issue. New Orleans joins the Fund alongside cities from around the world, which together spans 38 countries across six continents, representing over 62 million residents.

City of New Orleans, Partners Awarded Federal Grant to Reduce Food Waste and Expand Composting Services

The City of New Orleans was recently awarded $398,500 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Compost and Food Waste Reduction Program (CFWR) to increase the capacity of local composting organizations that will make it more accessible for residents. Local organizations working on food waste reduction and composting programs partnered on the proposal with the City, including Sprout NOLA, Schmelly’s Dirt Farm, REALCYCLE, Compost NOW and Taproot Earth.
