Mayor for A Day

The “Mayor for a Day” program aims to foster and encourage leadership in young people living in New Orleans.  New Orleans youth ages 11 to 18 are invited to write essays about what New Orleans would be like if they were Mayor for a day. Kattie Argueta

Firstly, you must know by now but my name is Kattie Argueta. The reason why I am saying this is because I want you to know what it’s like being a young Hispanic girl living in the United States, I’ll try my best to not make it too long, it’s not promised though :)

Both of my parents are immigrants. They both came here to the United States around 15-20 years ago from Honduras, not knowing what dangers they might encounter. Despite not knowing the customs or the language in this new country, they sacrificed a lot so me and my siblings wouldn’t have to live a rough life like they have to.

Since I was born here and my parents are from Honduras, I bear the weight of representing two flags and having to represent them well. If I don’t, I’m not American enough according to Americans, or Hispanic enough according Latin Americans. However, I am proud of who I am.

So, to prove to the people who believe in those stereotypes, that we’re drug dealers or taco munchers (I love tacos but let’s not give them a reason to talk down to me) and to prove to those that doubt me and to prove that I am not just an “illegal alien”, I decided to enter into this contest. Doing so, they will see that even a young girl has big dreams like adults. I want to be a voice for those whose opinions were shut down.

With all this said, I am really thankful for this opportunity. Firstly I thank God for watching over me and I thank you for recognizing me and allowing me to achieve a huge milestone while still in my youth.
