Beginning at 11:31 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017 the New Orleans Fire Department responded to three separate fires involving occupied residences across the city of New Orleans. The first involved a single family home in Algiers. NOFD firefighters arrived on the scene of 1644 Holiday Place at 11:34 p.m., finding heavy smoke and flames already noticeable on arrival. After being assured by the two residents of the home that everyone had escaped, firefighters performed an aggressive interior attack of the fire. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the room of origin, bringing this incident under control at 12:11 a.m. According to the residents, a father and son, were awakened by the home’s smoke alarms. The residents also stated that the fire is believed to have been started when one of them fell asleep while cooking. Eight NOFD units carrying twenty-five Fire Operations personnel were used during this incident. No injuries were reported.
The second of these incidents was reported by a 9-1-1 caller at 12:58 a.m. Dispatched to 1434 Alvar Street, firefighters arrived on the scene of this two-story, wood-framed occupied dwelling at 1:03 a.m. Upon arrival, the home’s owners informed fire personnel that everyone had escaped safely. Firefighters made a quick entry attacking the fire and containing all active fire to the home’s attic. A 56yr old male resident of the home was transported to an area hospital by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) with symptoms related to smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries reported. Eight NOFD units and twenty-five Fire Operations personnel brought this incident under control at 1:25 a.m.
The third and largest of the three incidents involved a two-story, wood-framed double in the 900 block of N. Dupree St. Dispatched at 1:51 a.m., the first NOFD company arrived on the scene of 915 N. Dupre St. at 1:57 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire through the roof in the rear of this dwelling. A second-alarm was called in shortly after arrival at 2:02 a.m. The owner of the property assured firefighters that no one was inside. The owner indicated to fire personnel that he arrived home and noticed light smoke coming from the upstairs apartment. As he investigated further, the smoke began to darken and he then noticed the flames. The resident stated he rescued three dogs prior to NOFD arrival. Thirteen NOFD units carrying forty-four Fire Operation personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 3:08 a.m. The New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS), the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and Entergy also assisted with the mitigation of this incident. The cause of this fire is under investigation and there were no injuries reported.
