NOFD Battles Two-Alarm Fire in the 7900 Block of Breakwater Drive

On Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 10:23 p.m., The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire in the 7900 block of Breakwater Drive stating a house and a boat were on fire. The first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 10:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from a two-story wood-framed boathouse heavily involved in the rear at 7936 Breakwater Drive. Firefighters made an interior attack but were immediately ordered from the fire building after it was discovered that a boat was engulfed in flames in the rear of the boathouse. A second-alarm was struck at 10:41 p.m. to account for exposures in close proximity and a second boat that began to catch fire. Fireboat Blaze was activated to fight the fire from the rear while firefighters fought the fire from the street. The owner of the 7936 Breakwater Dr. stated “he went to start his boat and it exploded”. Four homes in total were damaged by heavy smoke and fire. The initial fire building at 7936 Breakwater Dr. received heavy smoke and fire damage with one boat totally destroyed. The exposure at 7934 Breakwater Dr. received heavy smoke and fire damage with radiant heat damaging a boat, 7938 Breakwater Dr. received heavy smoke and fire damage to the rear of the boathouse and 7940 Breakwater Dr. received heavy smoke and fire damage to rear of the boathouse. Residents reported hearing a loud boom before they escaped from their homes safely prior to NOFD arrival.


Sixteen NOFD units, carrying forty-four Fire Operations personnel, responded to this incident. The New Orleans Emergency Medical Service (NOEMS), The American Red Cross and Harbor Police Department assisted in the mitigation of this incident. This incident was placed under control at 11:25 p.m. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
