NOPD’s Gang Unit today arrested a second shooter in the murders of two workmen in broad daylight nearly two weeks ago in the Seventh Ward.
Officers picked up 20-year-old Jasha Banks at around 12 noon today at her residence on Frenchman Street. Homicide Detective Timothy Bender, who was the lead investigator in this case, says Banks and 23-year-old Jeremiah Jackson opened fire on 46-year-old Moises Hernandez and 30-year-old Jose Bardales on September 9th as the two men returned to a residence on North Derbigny Street to continue doing electrical work. The men had just stepped out of their truck to eat lunch when Banks and Jackson shot them multiple times. Hernandez died of his wounds the following Saturday. Bardales succumbed to his injuries last Sunday.
NOPD had already gotten Jeremiah Jackson in custody. Both Banks and Jackson are booked with two counts of First Degree Murder.
Jasha Banks has two felony arrests and five misdemeanor arrests. Past arrests include Possession of Marijuana (two times) and municipal attachments.
Jeremiah Jackson is considered a possible career criminal, and has been previously arrested for Attempted First Degree Murder(2007), Illegal Carrying of Weapons, Illegal Firearms During a Crime, Possession of Heroin, Possession of Marijuana 1st and 2nd Offense, Aggravated Assault, Simple Escape, Flight from an Officer, Criminal Damage to Property, Criminal Trespass. Jackson had an outstanding Criminal Court District Warrant for Illegal Carrying of Firearms. He is currently on parole until 2014 for Possession of Heroin.
Homicide detectives also secured an arrest warrant today for a gunman wanted in an execution-style murder that happened in the Lower Garden District last June.
Detectives say that on June 14th, 25-year-old Travis Cochran and another suspect bound and gagged 33-year-old Ahmad Sheppard, pistol-whipped him and then shot him in the head in his home in the 2000-block of Prytania Street. Sheppard died shortly after EMS arrived on the scene.
Crime Lab technicians processed evidence left behind on the scene, and were able to identify Cochran as one of the suspects through forensic testing. Detectives are still in the process of identifying the second suspect.
Travis Cochran has four felony arrests, six misdemeanor arrests, and one traffic arrest. He is currently on probation until October 2014 for Possession of Crack Cocaine. Past arrests include Possession of Crack, Possession of Marijuana, Resisting/Obstructing an Officer, Bail Jumping Felony Case, Criminal Trespassing, Disturbing the Peace, Public Intoxication, warrants and traffic violations.
