The City of New Orleans

Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu

Resilience Projects - NOLA

City resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses, and systems within a city to survive, adapt, and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience.

City resilience is about more than building stronger infrastructure to hold back the water and withstand the wind. Our capacity to adapt is founded on our knowledge and learning from past experiences with shocks and stresses. However, some fundamental aspects of our existence as a coastal city have been hidden behind walls and under asphalt, including our slowly sinking deltaic soils and our disappearing wetlands.
