Trash Collection

The City of New Orleans offers bi-weekly curbside trash collection to eligible residents and small businesses courtesy of Richard’s Disposal (properties located south of I-10) or Metro Disposal (properties located north of I-10). The French Quarter and Downtown Development District are serviced under a separate set of collection regulations and schedules by Empire Services.

Types of Trash

Common Questions

Who is eligible for trash collection by the City?

Small businesses, single-family dwellings and multi-family dwellings with four or fewer units are eligible for residential trash collection from the City if they meeting the following restrictions:

  • Generate no more than 96 gallons of solid waste at each twice a week pick-up outside the French Quarter or the Downtown Development District.
  • Generate no more than 35 gallons of solid waste at each twice daily pick-up if within the French Quarter or the Downtown Development District.

Ineligible Buildings

The following buildings are not eligible for City of New Orleans' trash collection

  1. Hotels, restaurants, or bars
  2. Properties containing more than four units
  3. Small businesses which generate more than 35 gallons of solid waste at each regular collection.  

These properties must file application for Litter Abatement with the Sewerage and Water Board. The current fee is $100 per year or $4.00 per unit, whichever is greater.

How do I report a missed collection?

Citizens should report missed collections by calling 311. 311 agents will log the missed collection and send a ticket to the proper collection company to address.

How do I receive a collection cart?

Residential Trash Roll Carts

Orleans Parish residents should call 311 between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday-Friday, to request a Residential Trash Roll Cart.

Business Roll Carts

Restaurants, hotels and bars are not eligible for garbage or recycling collection services by the City.

What type of collection cart will I receive?

Each residence and small business will receive one (1) 96-gallon standard trash collection roll cart free of charge. The 96-gallon cart can hold 250 pounds of household garbage.

Those who qualify for special assistance may request 35-gallon or 64 gallon roll cart. Special consideration is given to seniors (65 years of age and older) and persons with disabilities.

When will my trash roll cart be delivered?

Residential trash roll carts should be delivered within two weeks of request.

What happens if my collection cart is stolen?

If this is the first time the trash collection roll cart associated with the respective property has been stolen, it will be replaced by the collection company at no cost. Should any additional carts be stolen from the property, replacement carts would need to be purchased from the collection company.

I recently moved, or have forgotten who my trash collector is. How can I find out?

The City of New Orleans is serviced by three trash collection companies:

  • Richard’s Disposal - servicing properties located south of I-10
  • Metro Disposal - servicing properties located north of I-10
  • Empire Services - servicing properties in the French Quarter and Downtown Development District

How do I dispose of yard waste?

Yard waste such as leaves and grass clipping should be bagged and placed next to the cart on the second collection day of the week. Yard waste items are tree limbs, grass clippings, scrubs, etc. Tree limbs should be bundled in 4-foot lengths, weighing no more than 75 pounds.

Residents who set out yard waste more than 24 hours before their scheduled pick-up will be subject to a fine.

How do I dispose of refrigerators, sofas and large items?

To collect bulky waste, sofas, mattresses, tires, and other large items, residents must call 311 to schedule collection of bulky waste. Bulky waste should not be placed out for collection 24 hours prior to the scheduled date given for collection. If residents place bulky items out more than 24 hrs prior to the scheduled collection, they will be fined. Small businesses do not receive bulky waste collection services.

Bulky waste includes those items that are not suitable to go into standard collection carts, generally due to weight and size, such as white goods, sofas, mattresses, tires and other large items.

Will dead animals be collected?

Dogs, cats, and other small animals weighing less than 25 pounds will only be collected from households and small businesses if the animal is put in a plastic bag and brought to the curb for collection. 


In the event that such animals are discovered on City streets, contact 311 to have the animal removed.


Whom do I contact if with questions or concerns about my service?

Citizens should call 311 for all questions and concerns about trash and recycling services.

What is holiday collection schedule?

Richard's Disposal (North of 1-10) & Metro Disposal (South of I-10)

Observe the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Mardi Gras Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

There will be no garbage or recycling collection on these days.  Regular collections will resume on the next scheduled collection day.

Empire Services (French Quarter & DDD)

Garbage collections occur 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  There will be no collection of recyclables on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Mardi Gras Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Recycling collections will resume on the next scheduled collection day.

What is the size of the 35-gallon roll carts?

The 35-gallon Residential Trash Roll Cart is 37.5 inches high, 19 inches wide and 23.75 inches in depth.

Can I place tires out for residential trash collection?

Yes, up to 4 tires can be placed curbside for residential trash collection on the eligible location's second collection day.

Is there a Recycling Drop Off Center?

Yes. The Recycling Drop Off Center is located at 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue. Citizens can drop off items on the second Saturday of every month (except for the month of Mardi Gras) from 8:00am until 1:00pm.

Where can I take construction and demolition (C&D) materials, large amounts of vegetation & garbage

Currently two landfills accept Construction and Demolition (C&D) and other materials:
