Class "A" Master Electrical License

In order to ensure public safety through compliance with the International Construction Code (ICC) as adopted by the City of New Orleans as well as all other related state and parish regulations, electricians performing work within the City of New Orleans are required to obtain and renew annually an Electrical License from the City. Electricians with ICC certifications who have passed LA State Licensing Board Examination can apply as Class "A" Electrical Contractors' ($125.00).

Restrictions

Only one Class "A" Master Electrical Contractor License holder is allowed per company.

Registration Process

New license applicants must first submit a complete application package based on their type of license request to tradelicenseinfo@nola.gov. All applications are subject to be reviewed by a team member. Upon completion of the review and all requirements are met, the applicant (qualifying party) will receive a scheduled appointment to come into our office in person for the processing of their license. 

Required Documents

All documents are required to be saved and attached as separate PDF or PNG or JPEG to your email.

  • You must submit a passing examination ICC Offcial Results Report F49 - Electrical Contractor (stamped unofficial is not acceptable) from ICC or if you passed the state test submit a copy of the State License (State Wide) and qualifying party letter and all requirements.

    • State Testing-- Louisiana State Licensing Board of Contractors (2525 Quail Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70808 (1-225-785-2301)
  • Original copy of State License
  • Complete the respective Electrical License Application 
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Color passport photo or self-taken picture yearly.
    • PICTURE REQUIREMENTS: taken within 3 to 6 months for the date of application. Facing the camera, standing up, the top of the head to shoulders, no images in the background of the picture, no hats.
  • Current proof of insurance. General Liability not less than $500,000 and Workers Compensation no less than the State requirement, both with the City of New Orleans listed as the certificate holder. (Note: In a situation where applicant claims to have no employees, a notarized affidavit will be needed). For insurance purposes, the City of New Orleans' Safety & Permits address is 1340 Poydras St, Suite 800, New Orleans, LA 70112.
  • Submit proof of Occupational/General Business License.
    • If you are outside of Orleans Parish, an Orleans Parish Certificate of Registration is required. You can register with the City of New Orleans, Bureau of Revenue, City Hall, Room 1W15  with a copy of your Parish Occupational License.   • Copy of Driver’s License or State Identification Card.

Renewal

Class "A" Master Electrical Licenses can be renewed online through the One Stop App. Attach all required documents to your renewal application in the One Stop App.

  • INACTIVE license request - If you’re requesting to renew your Master Class “A” Electrical as INACTIVE, you’re required to fill out and submit Inactive License Acknowledgement.

Duration

Expires on the license holder’s day of birth (as printed on issued Trade License card). Renewal periods starts 90 days before the license holder’s birthday.

Fees

  • Class A Electrical Contractor $125.00 annual (delinquent fee of $10.00 per month/ 1st business day after birthday. Licenses that are delinquent for over a year will have to retest with ICC in order to obtain another Class A license.)
  • Class A Electrical Contractor (inactive) $30.00 annual (delinquent fee of $10.00 per month/considered to be delinquent 1st business day after birthday)

Pick-Up

The qualifying party or authorized agent is required to pick-up their City of New Orleans Trade License card. License pick-up is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM from the Department of Safety and Permits offices located at 1340 Poydras St, Suite 800, New Orleans, LA 70112.
