Class "A" Master Mechanical Contractor License (AC, Refrigeration, and Gasfitters)

According to the International Code Council (ICC) and Louisiana Contractors Board as adopted by the City of New Orleans, mechanical contractors performing work within the City of New Orleans are required to obtain and renew annually a Mechanical Contractor License from the City. Gasfitters with ICC certifications can also apply for a Class A A/C Refrigeration license – you may hold either or both, however each have separate tests and separate payments. If you are a State Contractor – statewide you qualify for the Master Gasfitters License.

Restrictions

Only one Class "A" Master (A/C, Refrigeration, and Gasfitters) Mechanical Contractor License holder is allowed per company.

Registration Process

New license applicants must first submit a complete application package based on their type of license request to tradelicenseinfo@nola.gov. All applications are subject to be reviewed by a team member. Upon completion of the review and all requirements are met, the applicant (qualifying party) will receive a scheduled appointment to come into our office in person for the processing of their license. 

Required Documents

All documents are required to be saved and attached as separate PDF or PNG or JPEG to your email.

  • For Mechanical Gasfitter Licenses - You must submit your State Plumbing Board Master Natural Gasfitter Card or Certificate
  • For AC, Refrigeration Licenses and Hood Licenses - You must submit a passing examination ICC Offical Results Report G29 - Master Mechanical (stamped unofficial is not acceptable) from ICC (http://www.iccsafe.org/Accreditation/Pages/default.aspx) or if state tested, a copy of the State License (State Wide) qualifying party letter and all listed requirements.
    • For National Testing: International Code Council (877) 783-3926.
    • For State Testing: Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (225) 765-2301 (2525 Quail Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70808).
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Complete the respective Mechanical license application.
  • Color passport photo or self-taken picture yearly.
    • PICTURE REQUIREMENTS: taken within 3 to 6 months for the date of application. Facing the camera, standing up, the top of the head to shoulders, no images in the background of the picture, no hats.
  • Current proof of insurance. General Liability not less than $500,000 and Workers Compensation no less than the State requirement, both with the City of New Orleans listed as the certificate holder. (Note: In a situation where the applicant claims to have no employees, a notarized affidavit will be needed). For insurance purposes, the City of New Orleans' Safety & Permits address is 1340 Poydras St, Suite 800, New Orleans, LA 70112.
  • Submit proof of Occupational/General Business License.
    • If you are outside of Orleans Parish, an Orleans Parish Certificate of Registration is required. You can register with the City of New Orleans, Bureau of Revenue, City Hall, Room 1W15  with a copy of your Parish Occupational License.   • Copy of Driver's License or State Identification

Renewal

Class "A" Master (A/C, Refrigeration, and Gasfitters) Mechanical Licenses can be renewed online through the One Stop App. Attach all required documents to your renewal application in the One Stop App.

  • INACTIVE license request - If you’re requesting to renew your Master Class “A” AC - Refrigeration or Master Class "A" - Gasfitter license(s) as INACTIVE, you’re required to fill out and submit Inactive License Acknowledgement.

Duration

Expires on the license holder’s day of birth (as printed on issued Trade License card). Renewal periods starts 90 days before the license holder’s birthday..

Fees

  • Class A Mechanical Contractor $110.00 annual (delinquent fee of $10.00 per month/ 1st business day after birthday. Licenses that are delinquent for more than two (2) years will have to retest with ICC in order to obtain another Class A license.)
  • Class A Mechanical Contractor (inactive) $25.00 annual (delinquent fee of $10.00 per month/considered to be delinquent 1st business day after birthday)

Pick-Up

The qualifying party or authorized agent is required to pick-up their City of New Orleans Trade License card. License pick-up is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM from the Department of Safety and Permits offices located at 1340 Poydras St, Suite 800, New Orleans, LA 70112.
