Class "B" Journeyman Mechanical Contractor License (Mechanic and Gasfitters)

As adopted by the City of New Orleans, mechanical contractors performing work within New Orleans are required to obtain and renew annually a Journeyman Mechanic Contractor License and Gasfitters from the City. You may hold either or both, however each have separate tests and separate payments.

Restrictions

  • Any person engaged in the trade of installing or repairing equipment, materials or apparatus must be employed by and work under the supervision of a Class A Master Contractor.

Registration Process

New license applicants must first submit a complete application package based on their type of license request to tradelicenseinfo@nola.gov. All applications are subject to be reviewed by a team member. Upon completion of the review and all requirements are met, the applicant (qualifying party) will receive a scheduled appointment to come into our office in person for the processing of their license. 

Required Documents

All documents are required to be saved and attached as separate PDF or PNG or JPEG to your email.

  • For Mechanic - You must submit a passing examination ICC Official Results Report G31 - National Journeyman Mechanical (stamped unofficial is not acceptable).
  • For Gasfitters - You must submit your State Plumbing Board Natural Gasfitter Card or Certificate
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Complete the respective Mechanical license application.
  • Color passport photo or self-taken picture yearly.
    • PICTURE REQUIREMENTS: taken within 3 to 6 months for the date of application. Facing the camera, standing up, the top of the head to shoulders, no images in the background of the picture, no hats.
  • Copy of Drivers License or State Identification.
  • All Class "B" Journeyman Gasfitter licenses and Class "B" Journeyman Mechanic licenses are required to fill out and submit the Journeyman Acknowledgement Document.
    • According to City of New Orleans Code of Ordinances:
      • Chapter 26-16, Section 112.4: A Class “B” Journeyman Mechanic must be employed by and work under the supervision of a Class “A” Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor.
      • Chapter 26-18, Section 111.1: A Class “B” Journeyman Gasfitter must be employed by and work under the supervision of a Class “A” Master Gasfitter.

Renewal

Class "B" Journeyman Mechanical Licenses (Mechanic and Gasfitters) are to be renewed online through the One Stop App. Attach all required documents to your renewal application in the One Stop App.

  • For Gasfitters: You must submit your State Plumbing Board Natural Gasfitter Card or Certificate
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Complete the respective Mechanical license application.
  • Color passport photo or self-taken picture yearly.

Duration

Expires on the license holder’s day of birth (as printed on issued Trade License card). Renewal periods starts 90 days before the license holder’s birthday.

Fees

  • Class B Journeyman Mechanical Contractor (Mechanic and Gasfitters) $55.00 annual (delinquent fee of $5.00 per month/ 1st business day after birthday. Licenses that are delinquent for more than two (2) years will have to retest with ICC in order to obtain another Class B license.)

Pick-Up

The qualifying party or authorized agent is required to pick-up their City of New Orleans Trade License card. License pick-up is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM from the Department of Safety and Permits offices located at 1340 Poydras St, Suite 800, New Orleans, LA 70112.
