The City of New Orleans owns and manages six municipal cemeteries: Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, Lafayette Cemetery No. 2, Carrollton Cemetery No. 1 (also known as Green Street Cemetery), Carrollton Cemetery No. 2 (also known as St. Mary’s Cemetery), Valence Cemetery, and Holt Cemetery.
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 was founded in 1833 as the municipal cemetery for the suburb of Lafayette, which once comprised the neighborhoods of Irish Channel, Garden District, and Central City. The cemetery and suburb became part of the City of New Orleans in 1853. Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 is currently CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC while repairs and improvements take place. Family members of those interred in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 may make an appointment to visit the cemetery by calling (504) 658-3781.
The inscriptions and tablets of Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 were transcribed in 1996 by Fred and Heath Hatfield. This database is available at www.lafayettecemetery1.com and is an excellent resource for genealogical research.

Lafayette Cemetery No. 2 was founded in the early 1850s as a municipal cemetery. Divided into four quadrants, the cemetery is dominated by the tombs of more than twenty societies dedicated to causes ranging from organized labor, French and German benevolent organizations, and social aid and pleasure clubs.
Holt Cemetery

Holt Cemetery was established in 1879 as a municipal cemetery to be used for the burial of people who did not have the means for other arrangements and for people who were unidentified in death. Holt Cemetery ceased serving this function the late 1960s and is today dominated by plots maintained by families who hold servitude rights to respective plots.
Holt Cemetery is entirely below-ground. The city offers at-need burial space in the form of servitude rights. Call (504) 658-3781 to make arrangements.
Carrollton Cemetery No. 1

Carrollton Cemetery No. 1, often referred to as the Green Street cemetery, was founded around 1849 as the municipal cemetery for the suburb of Carrollton. The cemetery and the suburb were annexed to the City of New Orleans in 1874. The cemetery was, and is, dominated by in-ground burials with several aisles of above-ground tombs.

Valence Cemetery (or Valence Street Cemetery) was founded around 1869 as the municipal cemetery for the suburb of Jefferson. It is divided into four squares and is home to mostly below-ground burials and coping burials. Several society tombs remain in this historic landscape.
