Sidewalk Repair Permit

A Sidewalk Repair Permit is required to repair or replace any sidewalk located in the public right-of-way. The permit ensures work meets City safety, accessibility, and design standards in compliance with City Code.  

Who Can Apply? 

Property owners or their authorized agents/contractors may apply. Applications are reviewed by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and must be submitted through the City’s One Stop App

Fees

  • Canal Street (Claiborne Ave to City Park Ave): $20 application fee — Parks & Parkways approval required (City Code Sec. 146-186) 

  • Downtown Development District (DDD): $40 application fee — DDD approval required (City Code Sec. 146-193) 

  • Vieux Carré (French Quarter): $0.60 per square foot — 90% refundable after one year (City Code Sec. 146-194)

Refundable deposits may apply in special districts (e.g., Vieux Carré). Additional inspection fees may be assessed based on project scope. 

Pre-Application Checklist

Before applying, confirm you have: 

  • Site plan or drawings (showing dimensions, surface material, and restoration detail) 

  • Photos of existing sidewalk conditions 

  • Proof of property ownership or owner authorization letter 

  • Applicable location-based approvals (if in Parks & Parkways, DDD, or VCC jurisdiction) 

Tip: Incomplete or missing documents will delay review and permitting.

Required Documents

Include the following with your application: 

  • Site plan/drawing showing location, length, and width of repair area 

  • Surface material (concrete, brick, flagstone, etc.) and restoration method meeting City standards 

  • Photos of current sidewalk conditions 

  • Proof of ownership or owner authorization 

  • Required location approvals (if applicable) 

  • Contractor’s license information 

Steps to Apply

  1. Check location requirements – Confirm if your site is in Canal St., DDD, or VCC jurisdiction and obtain necessary approvals. 

  1. Prepare your documents – Gather all items listed under Required Documents. 

  1. Apply online – Submit through the One Stop App

  1. City review – DPW and other agencies (as applicable) review your plans for compliance. 

  1. Permit issued – If approved, you’ll receive permit conditions and inspection requirements. 

  1. Perform work – Complete the work exactly as approved and to City standard details. 

  1. Final inspection – Request a final inspection when work is finished. Refunds (where applicable) are processed after approval. 

You May Also Need

  • Construction Zone Permit — Required if your work will block or close any sidewalk, parking, or travel lane. 

  • Louisiana 811 Utility Locate — Call or request online at least 2 business days before digging

  • Beginning August 1, 2025, online training will be required for excavation work.
