Hurricane Laura Heads to Texas-Louisiana Border, Threat Lessens in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans continues to monitor Hurricane Laura as it is expected to make its way to the Texas-Louisiana border as a Category 3 hurricane Wednesday. Storm surge outside of the levee system is forecast to be the greatest impact to the local area; however, heavy rain, wind, and tornadoes are possible should an outer band track over the city.
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for areas outside of the levee system, including Venetian Isles, Lake Catherine, and Irish Bayou. Two to 4 feet of coastal flooding is possible in these areas, which remain under a voluntary evacuation order. No additional weather watches or warnings are in effect for Orleans Parish.
With fewer impacts expected from Laura, City services will return to normal. Neutral ground parking will end Wednesday morning and residents are asked to remove vehicles from neutral grounds and sidewalks by 8 a.m. Regularly scheduled trash and recycling collection will occur tomorrow for customers with Wednesday pickup. City Hall, the New Orleans Recreation Department, and New Orleans Public Libraries will continue regular operations under their respective COVID-19 guidelines.
The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will restore streetcar service beginning Wednesday, Aug. 26. Bus and streetcar service will operate on the Saturday schedule. Ferry Service will remain suspended until further notice. Riders are advised to check the agency website at www.RTAforward.org or call Rideline at 504-248-3900 for more information regarding service.
Residents should continue to be weather aware Wednesday and Thursday and be ready to shelter in place and stay off of the roads if necessary.
