Traffic Advisory: Temporary Lane Closures on Basin Street for Green Infrastructure Upgrades

NEW ORLEANS — On Monday, May 18, 2020, weather permitting, the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works contractor Hard Rock Construction will temporarily close lanes on Basin Street between North Villere Street and North Claiborne Avenue for approximately 10 weeks to install permeable pavement in the parking lanes. Public safety is our priority; commuters are asked to travel at reduced speeds and to be mindful of workers in the area.

In the parking lane, crews will be installing permeable pavement with a perforated pipe and four-foot storage compartment underneath. Permeable pavement helps absorb precipitation and surface runoff, storing it in the underground reservoir while slowly allowing water to infiltrate into the soil below or discharge into the drainage system.

One lane of traffic will remain open at all times; however, the parking lane will remain closed throughout construction. The approximately $750,000 project is bond funded and expected to be complete by July 31, 2020.
