City of New Orleans' Human Relations Commission Issues Statement on Vandalism of Mandeville Synagogue

NEW ORLEANS — The Human Relations Commission issued the following statement on the vandalism this week of Northshore Jewish Congregation:

“As the human rights office for the City of New Orleans, the Human Relations Commission strongly condemns the recent anti-Semitic attack on the synagogue in Mandeville, our St. Tammany Parish neighbor on the Northshore. Greater New Orleans is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the South, and this attack, days before the celebration of Rosh Hashanah -- the Jewish New Year -- is deeply troubling.

"In 2017 there was a 60 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the United States. The Human Relations Commission and Office of the Mayor encourage all of our residents to stand united to reject the hateful rhetoric that feeds such hate and division. Our entire region must remain a place where all of our residents know that they are safe and that they matter.”
